King Philip IV of France, known as Philip the Fair, was crowned in 1286. During his reign, the french treasury began to run dangerously low, and the kingdom was in heavy debt. One of these debts was to the Knights Templar, which had been acting as a bank for almost two hundred years while crusades were lacking. Philip IV decided to eradicate the Templars in an effort to bury his debt, and seize the Templar treasury. Hundreds of Templars were arrested simultaneously, and most were tortured into pleading guilty to heresy, to give credence to the arrestations. It was noted, however, that when Master of the Templars Jacques de Molay was publicly burned at the stake as an example, de Molay cursed Philip IV and his generations to come. The curse seemed to have come to life as the direct bloodline ran out, leaving the throne to another royal branch, in less than twenty years. Of Philip IV and his four children, Louis, Philip, Charles and Isabella, all met misfortune. Philip IV died a year after the execution of Molay, and the throne passed through the three sons faster than wildfire. Isabella, on her side, as Queen of England by alliance, also had a rough marriage, rule and life. One particular misfortune that is the subject of this tale is the Affair of the Nesle Tower. Philip (jr.) and Charles had married sisters Jeanne and Blanche of Burgundy, respectively. Louis had married the girls’ cousin, Margaret of Burgundy. Perhaps jealous of the easygoing life of her sisters-in-law, Isabella found out and revealed Blanche and Margaret’s infidelities to her father, Philip IV, in 1314. Philip IV, outraged, had both girls tried and imprisoned for life. Jeanne was also imprisoned, but put in a nicer prison, her only crime being complicity; she knew of her sister and cousin’s affairs with two sibling knights, Gautier and Philippe d'Aunay (both of whom were castrated, drawn and quartered, broken on a wheel, and finally hung). The affair was named after the couples’ usual rendez-vous spot: the Nesle Tower, an old watch tower. When Philip IV died and Louis X took over the throne in 1314, he immediately wanted a divorce from Margaret. The difficult to obtain piece of papal paper turned out to be unnecessary when Margaret died of a mysterious ‘illness’ while in prison. Louis remarried very soon after to secure the throne with an heir, while Philip (jr.), next in line for the throne, begged his elder brother to free Jeanne, who had only been guilty of knowing a secret. Eventually, Louis granted Philip’s request in 1315, but died very suddenly soon after without a liable heir. As for Blanche, she was divorced from Charles when his rule came in 1322, and she finished her days in an abbey. But to get back to Jeanne, it was not an easy thing to get her out of her predicament. Louis still loathed Margaret, and all women for a while, whenever he thought about her infidelities, bringing into question the very validity of their only daughter. However, Philip, known under his king title as Phillip V the Tall, had very good reasons for wanting his bride back...

Yesterday night, I attended the Cirque du Soleil, Alegria show, in the O2. I knew it was going to be awesome, but boy was it awesome. The night started with getting a bite to eat and making our way to our seats, which were well placed for our 'budget'. We were high up, but not too high, and bam smack in the middle, with a clear view of the stage. We were a bit early, but that was taken care of by a game of I Spy. At five to eight, I started noticing clowns walking around on the ground floor, interacting with the people seated there. Then all of a sudden there were performers everywhere, like monsters in a horror movie surround us. Then the music started, and the ringmaster, I'm assuming that's what the weird Quasimodo dude was, beginning singing in an upbeat tempo: 'ALEGRRRRIIAA'. And that was how the show started. We saw fire performers, trapeze artists, contortionists, amazing people that jumped up and balanced on a thin (wooden?) beam, doing flips in the air, there was singing, and as far as I could tell, the music was live, being played by a band in the furthest reaches of the stage. There were also clowns, two in particular, that did their own little routines as a sort of intermission in between performances. They were hilarious! In fact, I think they might have been my favorite part of the show! There were also hula-hoops performers, and this one guy that was inside a giant hoop, spinning around in it. That was cool to see.
But I think my absolute favorite, apart from the clowns, was the trampoline artists. Jumping around, bouncing, flipping with the music.
But there was also so much to see, like little acts during the acts. People moving around on the stage during a performance, interacting with each other, some just lurking about. You could watch the show five times and everytime find something new that is going on.

Overall the Cirque du Soleil was a brilliant thing to watch, and a definite thing to add to your bucket list. Mine has already been checked off.
However, I suggest you bring your own snacks and beverages (if in the O2), as when thirst hit us and we decided to buy a bottle of water, it was three euros, for a small 500ml bottle! So be careful of that!

S/N: There was a strict 'No Photography Allowed', so no pictures for this blog. Sorry!

In Codecademy, I completed the Dice Game, and here it is for all to see. The rules of this virtual game are simple: You have two die, and rolling them give you a certain score. Rolling a one on either dice is bad, and results in a score of zero for the particular 'one' dice. If you roll a double, that is two die with the same number, then your score is doubled. Otherwise your score is just one dice added to the other. Quite boring to play after a while, but quite fun to create.

var die1 = Math.floor(Math.random()*6 + 1);
var die2 = Math.floor(Math.random()*6 + 1);
var score;

if (die1 === 1 || die2 === 1) {
    score = 0;
}

else {
  if (die1 = die2) {
      score = die1 + die2 + die1 + die2;
  }

  else {
      score = die1 + die2;
  }
}

console.log("You rolled a "+die1+" and a "+die2+" for a score of "+score);

An example of an outcome would be:

"You rolled a 2 and a 2 for a score of 8"

But the outcome changes everytime due to the random numbers created.

In Misery, Paul Sheldon, a bestselling writer, gets in a car accident in rural Colorado while drunkenly driving around after finishing his latest novel. He is saved from the crash by Annie Wilkes, who happened to be passing by, but when Paul wakes up, he is in her guest bedroom, jacked on a strong drug, both of his legs broken from the crash, and in the mercy of Annie, who declares herself his greatest fan. However, when Annie discovers that Paul killed off his best-selling character, Misery Chastain, in a series of romance Victorian-era novels, she shows a completely different side of herself...

First off, from what I remember of the movie, the two are completely different, and although I don't know why I bother to even write this: the book was definitely better than the movie. And again, why do I bother, but the book was brilliant, as is anything written by Stephen King. One aspect I found particularly good, was the way in which the story was told. Everything is in third person, and yet, everything is from Paul's point of view, including all his back thoughts, his pain, and his fear. Also, the analogies may seem extremely far fetched and difficult to understand, but King effortlessly recounts some of Paul's childhood memories, and when he later writes such things as "the tide is in", or "the bee goddess", we immediately know what he is talking about. The characters are extremely deep, and in a way, understandable. Annie is also easy to understand, with the help of Paul's observations, and the visible pattern in her behaviour.

Spoiler Alert

SelectReveal</>

The ending was also very good, especially the fact that we saw how Paul coped after getting away, which was pretty badly. Honestly, after losing a foot, having a limp for the rest of my life, without a left thumb, hooked on Novril (a fictional codeine-based drug), and with the memories of Annie, I doubt I could have done any better. The ending seems realistic, with Paul turning into an alcoholic (in withdrawal from the Novril) with writer's block, constantly having hallucinations of Annie coming to kill him. But he still has a ray of hope in the end! How wonderful!

I also would've liked to read the Misery novels. From the excerpts we are given, it seems very good! I'm a sucker for the Victorian era, romance, and love triangles, so I think I would love it! And the style of writing is very different, King clearly showing that Paul is a writer different from him, both having their own original style.

To summarise, the book is awesome, stomach clenching (remember the 'hobbling' scene... ugh...), gripping, and impossible to set down. It really makes you think of people's psychology, and how the human body treats pain and addiction. The main thing I got from this however, is that I will never name my daughter, if I have one, Annie. It would be bad luck, and constantly creep me out.

Victor Noir was born in Paris on the 11th of January 1870. His notoriety started when a radical newspaper, La Revanche, published an article against Bonapartists and dictatorships. Then Emperor Napoleon Bonapart III's cousin, Prince Pierre Bonaparte, responded by having his angry letter published by a loyalist newspaper L'Avenir de la Corse. Another radical newspaper, La Marseillaise, took La Revanche's side in the quarrel. Pierre demanded a duel with Henri Rochefort, owner of La Marseillaise, while the editor of the same newspaper, Paschal Grousset, also demanded a duel with Pierre. Victor Noir registers in here: he was asked by his friend and editor Paschal Grousset to be a witness in the dual, alongside fellow friend and witness, Ulrich de Fonveille.

Victor and Ulrich travelled to Pierre Bonaparte's home in order to give him the demand for a duel. Pierre, with his tempestuous personality, was outraged that the duel did not come from Henri Rochefort, who had not answered Pierre's demands. What happened next is told in two different versions. Ulrich claims that out of anger, Pierre struck Victor, and promptly shot him, killing Victor on the spot. Pierre, however, claims self defense when Victor, insulted by Pierre's disgust at people lower ranked than him asking a duel, struck him first at which Pierre shot him in response. This second version was accepted in court and Pierre Bonaparte was acquitted.

Pierre's acquittal at the murder was seen as a direct strike against republicans, and Noir's funeral procession was attended by over 100,000 republicans, thinking it to be their civic duty. A number of public outcries and violent demonstrations ensued until events led Napoleon III to be defeated in the Franco-Prussian Wars, and eventually leading to the overthrow of the Empire.

Noir himself was not particularly important, but many believe his death to be the catalyst to anti-dictatorship protests, and although almost non-related, also catalyst to the end of the Empire.
